Carolina Lithium
North Carolina, USACarolina Lithium is a development-stage, multi-phase, fully integrated lithium operation in Gaston County, North Carolina.
Situated in the renowned Carolina Tin-Spodumene Belt, Carolina Lithium is designed to include a mining operation, spodumene concentrator, and a lithium hydroxide conversion plant. This development-stage project aims to become one of the most sustainable lithium hydroxide manufacturing sites in the world, contributing to U.S. energy security.
Its unique location in the growing “Battery Belt” provides excellent infrastructure, cost-effective baseload grid power, a skilled local workforce, and proximity to key lithium customers and by-product markets.

Historic Setting & Greenfield Opportunity
- Historic Belt: From the 1950s to the 1980s, the Carolina Tin-Spodumene Belt supplied nearly all the world’s lithium. Much remains underexplored and yet to fully reveal total resource potential.
- Greenfield Operation: Being designed from the ground up allows the integration of modern technologies, systems, and procedures. The project expects to utilise Metso’s pressure leach technology, potentially providing advantages in capital and operating costs compared to traditional hard-rock lithium conversion methods.
- Strategic U.S. Resource: Carolina Lithium is one of only two significant spodumene projects in the country, representing a critical avenue for strengthening the domestic battery supply chain.
Expected Advantages
- Fully Integrated Production: Mining, concentrate production, and lithium hydroxide conversion potential on a single site.
- Leading Sustainability Profile: Planned use of Metso:Outotec technology and an integrated approach to reduce the environmental footprint.
- Location, Location, Location: Excellent infrastructure, minimal transport distances, and ready access to rail, road, and skilled labour.
- By-product Recovery: Potential for economic and environmental benefits through responsible waste management.
- Supportive Policy Environment: Low corporate tax rate, no major royalties, and eligibility for clean energy incentives.
